Memorial of Rani Velu Nachiyar, monument of Kuili inaugurated

: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated a memorial of Rani Velu Nachiyar and a monument of Veerathai Kuili at Soorakulam village in Sivaganga district through video conferenceing.
While the Rani Velu Nachiar memorial was built at a cost of Rs 60 lakh, the monument for Veerathai Kuili was built at a cost of Rs 27.50 lakh. The Chief Minister also unveiled a bronze statue of Velu Nachiar in the memorial, an official press release said.
"Rani Velu Nachiar was the first Indian woman to fight the British by taking up weapons and she brought laurels to Tamil Nadu through her unparalelled valour."
Veerathai Kuili who was the Rani's bodyguard fought the British and laid down her life for the sake of the country.
The memorial and the monument were inaugurated yesterday, the release added.
