The Ministry of Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation briefed the Council of Ministers on Wednesday about progress made under different projects aimed at cleaning the Ganga river, a senior ministry official said.
In a 45-minutes presentation, the ministers were informed that while works under some MoUs on conservation of the river were going at a good pace it was yet to gather momentum in some other cases, said U P Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation.
Following the presentation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested that information on the work done under the clean Ganga mission should be disseminated to the people more effectively, Singh said.
The Namami Gange project or the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is one of the flagships programmes of the Modi government.
"The presentation also gave us an opportunity to inform the ministers about the work done under it as we have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with 12 different ministries, including environment and forest, petroleum and gas, Aayush, agriculture and power," Singh said.
The ministers were briefed about works like afforestation, solid waste management, building of ghats along the river, he said.
"After the presentation, the prime minister suggested the work done under the project should be taken to the people in simple language.
Cleaning of the Ganga river was one of the key promises made by the BJP in the run-up to the 2014 polls.
