France today said there was sufficiant proof on use of chemical weapons by Syrian regime against its population for which it has "to be punished one way or the other".
"Our stand is very clear. We consider that what has happened in Syria is a crime. The people responsible for this crime is the Syrian regime and they have to be punished one or another," French Ambassador to India Francois Richer told PTI on the sidelines of an event today.
Justifying the stand of France on Syria, he said that if there is no response from the international community, it will be a message to all dictators wherever they are that they are free to use chemimcal weapons .
"We believe that in this respect, there is a necessity to act and we are trying to build a coalition of countries which are supporting such reactions. We hope to complete that very quickly," the Ambassador said.
He said that his country will wait for the American Congress' decision but added that in the end it is the US president who decides.
Richer said that they have proof that Syria has chemical agents which can be used for weapon's purpose.
"Our assessment is that they (Syria) have one thousand tonnes chemical agents usable for weapon purposes. The chemical weapons were used in the conflict and they have been used by the Syrian army against the Syrian population. We have sufficient proof of that and the case is absolutely clear," he said.
