The state government had issued an appointment order to this effect yesterday.
Singh, while talking to reporters after taking charge, observed that there had been a reduction in cases of serious crime in Madhya Pradesh.
"While talking about the crime figures in the state one has to see that the incidents of crime which are of serious nature have reduced in the state and their number is reducing steadily," Singh said.
Describing the post of state DGP as a "challenging" one, Singh said his priority would be to foster friendship between the police personnel and common people in the state and also make the police force more accountable.
Replying to a query, the DGP said although a number of places in the state had been hit by communal violence in the past, police have taken several measures to curb such incidents by taking people into confidence.
