Bmws Rovers Producing Unit To Be Sold Off

The German car manufacturers, BMW, have precipitated a crisis for the British Government , by indicating the closure of their Longbridge plant near Birmi-ngham, where Rover cars are being produced. The largest single plant in the country it employs over 38000 workers.
Fears are that over 50,000 would be jobless with the closure of the plant at Longbridge and Cowley.
The union leaders have flown to Munich and Brussels for negotiations while the Trade Secretary Stephen Byers held talks with members of a consortium which has put in a bid.
The consortium is led by a former Rover marketing director who has now set up an advertising agency.
He has reportedly secured financial support from the venture capital firm Alchemy.
Sources inform that Mr Byers has agreed with the Consortium to offer government funding.
