Major tea companies are spending a significant amount of money on welfare schemes for their employees.

This study of 250 giants, however, reveals a marginal decline in the ratio of welfare expense to total income to 0.76 per cent in 1994-95 from 0.79 per cent in the preceding year.

The biggest contributor in welfare expenses was Tata Engineering & Locomotive Co, which set aside Rs 55.18 crore to meet welfare expenses.

Others in the top 10 included Larsen & Toubro (Rs 42.49 crore), Reliance Industries (Rs 29.22 crore), Mahindra & Mahindra (Rs 26.77 crore), Tata Tea (Rs 25.13 crore), Escorts (Rs 23.72 crore), Grasim (Rs 19.05 crore) , ITC (Rs 16.38 crore) and Ashok Leyland (Rs 14.53 crore).

In 1994-95, engineering and construction giant Larsen & Toubro completed 25 years of its medical and welfare services. Apart from looking after the preventive, occupational and curative health needs of employees and their families at its Powai works and at the Andheri Welfare centre, L&T also extends these services to the community as part of its social objectives.

The company has been doing considerable work in family planning, mother & child health care, leprosy control etc.

L&T is now collaborating with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to run a tuberculosis clinic.
