Meanwhile, Maharashtra yesterday made an aggressive presentation at the Sahyadri guest house, a source said. Chief minister Manohar Joshi hosted a dinner in honour of a high-level Fiat delegation led by its global auto-division head Roberto Testore.

The source said that the company had not yet made up its mind on Maharashtra for the project. It is likely that another delegation would visit sites in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

It is all too premature to say that Maharashtra has bagged the project. It will depend on various factors like benefits that are being extended by way of tax concessions and infrastructure. Moreover, the sites themselves will have to be evaluated. Of course, Maharashtra is a top contender, the source said.

Tamil Nadu recently bagged the Mahindra-Ford Fiesta project, earlier slated for Maharashtra, through aggressive marketing. It was Fords decision to go in for Tamil Nadu to insulate its project from any labour trouble in any of the Mahindra plants, all of which are housed in Maharashtra.
