The Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) has identified two projects, both coal-based, of 2000 mw each for development by independent power producers (IPPs).

The board has applied to the centre for clearance of these projects along with the expansion of Nippon Denro Ispat's 1082 mw Bhadravati project by another 1000 mw.

The sites chosen for the projects are Umrer near Nagpur and Jaygad in Western Maharashtra. The preliminary approval of the Centre has been sought particularly keeping in mind coal linkages for the projects.

MSEB sources said the project proposed in Jaygad, which is a coastal site, will use imported coal, while Ispat already has a captive coal mine. In effect, it is the Umrer project which will require clear linkages from the coal committee, the sources said.

The projects, as per the latest power guidelines, will be put to tender once the `in-principle' sanction is received from the coal committee. At present, for all practical purposes, there are three IPP projects being set up in Maharashtra
