Hardik Pandya takes his maiden five-for to put India ahead in the 3rd Test of 5-match series. India take a vital 168-run lead in the first innings

On Day 2 of 3rd Test of 5-match series, a disciplined batting helped India score 124/2 in their second innings, taking 292-runs lead at stumps against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Cheteshwar Pujara (33) and Skipper Virat Kohli (8) were at the crease when umpires dislodged the bails for the day. For England, Adil Rashid and Ben Stokes chipped in one wicket each in the last session. Resuming the second day at 307 for six, India's lower-order batsmen — Ravichandran Ashwin (14) Ishant Sharma (1 not out), Mohammed Shami(3) and Jasprit Bumrah (0) — failed to make any substantial contribution to the score. Overnight batsmen Rishabh Pant only managed to add just two runs to his score before going back to the pavilion. Coming into bat, England started their innings steadily. The hosts were 46/0, trailing by 283 runs at lunch. England openers Alastair Cook Aand Keaton Jennings applied themselves handsomely and made sure they went for lunch without losing any wicket. Cook faced 30 balls and slammed three boundaries while Jennings played 25 deliveries and hit the same number of boundaries. But after lunch, England struggled as Indian bowlers bounced back in style.

Hardik Pandya's 5/28 broke the back of English batting line-up as the hosts were bundled out for 161 in their first innings. India rode on a brilliant bowling display as the entire England batsmen were wrapped after they added just 115 runs in the second session of the second day. After a decent start, as England were 46 for no loss at lunch, the Indian bowlers came all guns blazing to hand their side a 168-run lead after India's first Inning score of 329. Apart from Pandya, pacers Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah scalped couple of wickets each conceding 32 and 37 runs respectively while Mohammed Shami bagged one.

Day 2: Third session report

• After tea, opening duo of Shikhar Dhawan (44) and KL Rahul (36) looked to build on India's advantage by making another cautious start.
• Rahul, in particular, was aggressive as he hit seven fours and scored at 100-plus strike rate during his 33-ball stay.
• Dhawan, on the other end, was a bit more watchful as the duo brought up the 50 in the ninth over.
• But Ben Stokes (1/30) broke the partnership by cleaning up Rahul in the 12th over.
• New man in, Pujara was cautious after his recent failures and put on 51 runs with Dhawan for the second wicket before Adil Rashid (1/23) foxed the left-hander with a google, only to be stumped by Jonny Bairstow.
• At stumps on day two, India were well placed at 124 for two in 31 overs in their second innings with Cheteshwar Pujara batting on 33 and skipper Virat Kohli unbeaten on 8.
• India, thus, took an overall lead of 292 runs over England with three full days play remaining in the match.

Day 2: Second session report

• Coming on to bat after lunch, the hosts crossed 50 in the 10th over, after which the downfall began.
• Sharma was handed the ball as play restarted and he had both openers -- Alastair Cook (29) and Keaton Jennings (20) in all sorts of trouble.
• He dismissed Cook for the tenth time in Test cricket, caught behind in the 12th over after the left-hander was dropped by Cheteshwar Pujara at first slip two balls earlier.
• On the very first ball of the next over, Bumrah removed Jennings caught behind as well.
• Olliver Pope (10) and Joe Root (16) added 21 runs for the third wicket, but Sharma's fuller lengths caused all sort of troubles for both the batsman. He had Pope caught behind as well with Rishabh Pant latching on to his third catch of the day.
• Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (0/3) went off the field for a short time owing to a stiff hip, but he recovered enough to return to the field.
• Pandya made sure that the off-spinner wasn't required at all in the first innings. First, he had Root caught at second slip with KL Rahul getting his fingers under the ball in time for the TV umpire to rule in his favour.
• An over later, Pandya and Rahul combined again to send Jonny Bairstow (15) back.
• England were reeling at 108 for 5 in the 30th over as Ben Stokes' struggle ended with Rahul this time claiming a catch off Mohammed Shami (1/56).
• Pandya wasn't done just yet. His next three wickets came in the space of three balls across the 31st and 33rd over, during which he was on a hattrick as well.
• Pandya accounted for both Chris Woakes (8) and Adil Rashid (5) as Pant collected his fifth catch in only his first Test outing.
• Pandya was on a hattrick after he trapped Stuart Broad (0) with the first ball of the next over, but James Anderson (1 not out) fended it off.
• Pandya's 28-ball effort was the second-quickest five-wicket haul for India in Test cricket after Harbhajan Singh took a fiver off 27 balls against West Indies in 2006.
• Jos Buttler (39) threw his bat around and hit three fours and two sixes as England barely managed to save the follow on. He added 33 runs for the last wicket with Anderson before holing out off Bumrah in the deep.

Day 2: First Session report

• India's opening pacers Mohammed Shami (0/23) and Jasprit Burmah (0/16) lost control of the proceedings as the English openers weathered the first couple of overs to score at 5-run an over thereafter.
• The Indian slip cordon helped them as Jennings edged through the vacant fourth slip when he was on 1.
• Bumrah bowled a predominantly leg stump line and failed to exert himself, while Shami gave away width as the ball didn't swing much early on despite cloud cover.
• Earlier, play was delayed by 30 minutes due to morning rain.
• Thereafter, all eyes were on youngster Rishabh Pant (24) but he only added two runs to his overnight score as Broad worked him over with angled deliveries.
• Pant played on in the fifth over of the day, and afterwards India's tail threw in the towel quickly.
• Broad also accounted for R Ashwin (14) who was bowled with an incoming delivery that ricocheted onto the stumps off his pads.
• Ashwin had earlier been left off on nought when Jos Buttler ducked under a catch at slip, and then again on 13 when Olliver Pope dropped him at fourth slip.
• Shami (3) and Bumrah (0) hardly provided any resistance as Anderson cleaned them up off successive deliveries in the 95th over.
• Shami just went for a skier, while Bumrah presented absolutely no defence as India's long tail failed to wag again.
• Even so, this was India's highest total on English soil after being put into bat. The Indians had earlier scored 295 at Lord's in 2014.

How Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane put India in commanding position on Day 1?
 
The Indian cricket team had the best day so far in the ongoing Test series as captain Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane shared a brilliant 159-run partnership, before England clawed their way back in a riveting first day of the third Test match at Trent Bridge. In overcast conditions and a pitch that offered an even contest between bat and ball, openers KL Rahul (23) and Dhawan (35) made a cautious start as India batted with discipline. The duo shared a 60-run stand before the latter was dismissed by English pacer Chris Woakes. Woakes then accounted for Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara (14) and India stumbled to 82 for 3 after 27 overs, and were staring at yet another chance of a batting collapse. However, Kohli (97) and Rahane (81) were watchful from the beginning, leaving deliveries that were swaying away from them. The duo displayed a picture of calmness and were excellent in running between the wickets, as India steadied the ship and put England in a spot of bother. Both Kohli and Rahane looked at ease against spin and pace and played glorious shots to put India in a commanding stage. The two players scored 23 boundaries between them and registered their fifties respectively. England tried all their tricks and plans to separate Kohli and Rahane, but were always thwarted by the duo. India were in a comfortable position at tea. Meanwhile, Rahane, who scored 3,000 Test runs in the process, got a life on 57, when James Anderson failed to take a blinder at point off Woakes. However, the relief was short lived as the 30-year-old Mumbai batsman played a similar shot, wherein Alastair Cook pulled off a one-handed catch, eventually being dismissed for a well-made 81. Kohli (97) looked in sublime touch and was on course to reach his 23rd Test century, when he decided to go downtown and played a rash shot, resulting in a thick edge towards Ben Stokes at slip. Ajjinkya Rahane finally delivers in 2018

The year 2018 has been tough for Ajinkya Rahane. During the South Africa tour, he was dropped for the first Test match in favour of Rohit Sharma. In the final test against Proteas he did make 48 runs but failed score in lone test against Afghanistan. He did not have much to show for his efforts in the first two Tests against England. On most of the occasions, he needlessly got out after being set. The lack of runs from overseas specialist was hurting India's chances. In fact, before this Test, he had not crossed a fifty-plus score since the century against Sri Lanka in 2017. Before the Test match, Ravi Shastri had asked the batsmen to be ready to play ugly cricket to be successful. Rahane took the advice seriously and did the same. Once he had a measure of the bowlers and the conditions, everything started to fall in place for him. Most of his boundaries were scored in the point region. It never looked as if he was out of form. He even outscored Kohli.
