Microsoft India Development Centre (MIDC) is singularly working on developing the second version (V2) of its disk-based back-up product, Data Protection Manager (DPM).

The first version of the product (DPM V1) was a collaborative effort between the Hyderabad and Redmond centres of the $39.79 billion software behemoth.

Speaking to Business Standard, Srini Koppolu, managing director of MIDC, said, "The global theme of Microsoft has always been integrated innovation. A majority of the company's revenues comes from its mega products like Windows, Office and MSN. So, while the focus had to be on developing technologies and features for these mega products, incubation of new ideas could not be ignored as well." The 1,000-people strong centre has almost grown 10-fold in the last four years.

MIDC has worked on adding features like remote access, digital imaging and the likes for Windows Vista too. "While we work on adding features to Microsoft's products, we have also successfully set up core centres of excellence (CoE) on radio frequency identification (RFID) and data protection," he added.

DPM can save all data on disks instead of tapes. DPM V1, which was released in the second half of 2005, supports Windows Server technologies such as Active Directory, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003. DPM V2, according to Koppolu, will have support for various other applications as well.

"We will add broader data source coverage and support like Exchange Server and SQL Protection. This means that while in DPM V1 data files are protected, in DPM V2, mails and SQL database, besides data files, will also be protected," he added.

DPM V2 is likely to be released in the second half of 2007. Meanwhile, the RFID platform technologies (completely done out of MIDC) will be released by the end of 2006 or early 2007. MIDC is also working on developer and platform offerings for mobile devices.
