Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury denies quitting as Bengal Congress president

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday rubbished reports that he has resigned as the president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee.

 

He claimed that following the Congress' constitution, presidents of all state units have become temporary chiefs after the election of the party's national president Mallikarjun Kharge.

 

"I am the provisional president of the state Congress. Since the day Mallikarjun Kharge became the All India president, no other state in India has had a president," Chowdhury said.

 

He said it is surprising that the media were cooking up stories that he had resigned.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury resigned as the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee's chief after a meeting of the state unit of the committee this afternoon, convened to review the reasons behind the party's poor performance in the state in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, reports NDTV.
 

However, there is no official confirmation from the Congress leadership on whether his resignation has been accepted. Speculations have already surfaced over who would succeed him.

Tata Steel workers in UK to begin indefinite strike action on July 8

Around 1,500 Tata Steel workers in Britain will begin an indefinite strike from July 8 over the company's plans to close two blast furnaces and cut up to 2,800 jobs, the trade union Unite said on Friday. Monsoon enters south Bengal but rain remains elusive

Southwest monsoon officially entered some parts of southern West Bengal on Friday, the Met office said, but rain remained elusive in most areas of the region.

The IMD said that monsoon has advanced into the whole of north Bengal, which is experiencing heavy rain over the last few days.

Monsoon covered Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad and some parts of Hooghly, Howrah, Purba Bardhaman and Birbhum districts of south Bengal, it said.

India's forex reserves dropped by $2.922 billion to $652.895 billion for the week ended June 14, the Reserve Bank said on Friday.
