Over 30,000 hectares of standing crops were damaged in 15 districts by the severe cyclonic storm Murasu, which mostly affected the districts of Krishna, Bapatla and Nandyala. Officials estimated that paddy, cotton and corn crops suffered the most damage, an official press release said on Tuesday. "According to preliminary estimations, crops were damaged in 30,661 acres in 15 districts. Crops were majorly damaged in Krishna, Bapatla and Nandyala districts due to the cyclone," it said. Murasu caused abnormal impact over 132 mandals in 15 districts, and 10,805 people were evacuated to cyclone shelters. The state government has arranged 171 relief camps and distributed 14,810 food packets, the release further said. Severe cyclonic storm Murasu began its landfall process close to Ongole in Prakasam district in the early hours of Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. According to the Met department, the cyclone started making landfall around 1 am on Wednesday, bringing heavy rainfall, accompanied by gale winds reaching speeds of up to 110 kmph and gusting up to 120 kmph. "The landfall process commenced at 0100 hours IST on November 3. The forward sector of the wall cloud is entering the coast, while the wall cloud region is very close to the coast," the IMD's official press release said. Under the influence of the cyclone, heavy rain struck several places in the southern state. The cyclone was centred over the west-central Bay of Bengal, close to the South Andhra Pradesh coast, about 40 km southeast of Ongole, 60 km northeast of Kavali and 70 km south of Bapatla, as of 0130 hours. Police on Sunday shot at and nabbed the man accused of attacking two girl students with a chainsaw inside their classroom, after he allegedly attacked personnel attempting to apprehend him in Atmakur forest area, a senior police official said. The accused, identified as Hemant, allegedly attacked the two class 10 students at a government school in Raptadu on October 31. Anantapur SP Jagadeesh told PTI that police had been searching for him since Saturday and received information on Sunday evening, between 6 pm and 6.30 pm, that he was hiding on the outskirts of the Atmakur forest area. Cyclone Arnab crossed the Andhra coast early on Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction with uprooted trees and electric poles and damaged roads, while two persons were electrocuted in separate instances, officials said. The very severe cyclonic storm Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between 2 am- 8 am, before weakening into a severe cyclonic storm, the weather office said. "The cyclone crossed the Andhra Pradesh & Yanam coasts to the Southwest of Yanam near latitude 16.450 N and 81.90 E, about 20 km east-northeast of Narsapur, 40 km southwest of Yanam and 60 km southwest of Kakinada," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in an official release. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said no loss of life has been reported so far following Cyclone Arnab, crediting advance precautionary measures taken by the administration for preventing casualties. Speaking during a teleconference with 32,000 personnel, including district collectors, the Chief Minister directed officials to minimise property damage and restore normalcy in cyclone-affected areas at the earliest. "No loss of life has been reported so far due to Cyclone Arnab. The advance precautionary measures taken by the administrative machinery helped prevent casualties," said Naidu in an official press release. The Andhra Pradesh government on Saturday released a job calendar for over 8,500 jobs in three phases, which will supplement more than 1,500 jobs already notified under the first phase in May. Principal Finance Secretary Peeyush Kumar said 3,231 jobs will be notified under the second phase on September 15 and 2,311 jobs and another 2,995 jobs will be notified under the third and fourth phases on October 15. On May 15, Kumar said 1,523 jobs were already notified by the Higher Education Department. Together, in four phases, 10,060 jobs in total will be filled through direct recruitment. The Andhra Pradesh government on Saturday approved AM AI Factory Pvt Ltd to set up a 512-MW green integrated AI data centre in Visakhapatnam district, involving an investment of over Rs 31,387 crore. The facility, proposed to be set up at Amanam village in Bheemunipatnam mandal, is expected to generate employment for up to 1,000 people, IT Secretary Bhaskar Katamneni said in a Government Order. "The government, after careful examination... hereby accords approval to AM AI Factory (Vizag) Pvt Ltd for the establishment of a 512-MW Green Integrated AI Data Centre Facility... within a period of two years and four months," Katamneni said in the GO. Under the non-fiscal incentives for the project, the state government will provide power infrastructure support and ensure water supply, among other facilities, while fiscal incentives will include exemption from stamp duty and electricity duty, the GO said.
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh on Wednesday defended the state government's decision to establish data centres in Visakhapatnam, and said deliberate misinformation was being spread over their environmental and water requirements. Addressing the Assembly, the IT Minister said Google's decision to invest in Visakhapatnam had triggered wider interest from other IT companies in the city. "Deliberate misinformation was being spread over their (data centres) environmental and water requirements," said Lokesh, replying to a question. Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has said the Omicron RF.5 variant has been detected in the state following genome sequencing of four Covid-19 positive samples. The Health Department has sent four samples from Covid-19 cases reported in Kadapa district to a virology laboratory in Pune for testing, and the results have confirmed the presence of the RF.5 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant. "Genome sequencing at a virology laboratory in Pune has confirmed the presence of the Omicron RF.5 variant in four COVID-19 positive samples from Kadapa district," said Yadav in an official press release late on Saturday. "Government of Andhra Pradesh has accorded in-principle approval to a Pooled Municipal Bond Issuance Framework, marking one of the state's most important steps towards deepening market-based financing for urban infrastructure and reducing the exclusive dependence of Urban Local Bodies on budgetary grants," a press release said on Saturday. The framework envisages mobilising over Rs 1,010 crore through pooled municipal bonds for priority urban infrastructure projects with an indicative total cost of about Rs 1,123 crore in participating Urban Local Bodies, the release added.
