India on Friday trashed as "false and baseless" a senior Bangladeshi official's claim of its involvement in violent clashes in Bangladesh. Following the clashes at Khagrachhari district in Chittagong Hill Tracts in southwestern Bangladesh last week, de-facto home minister Jahangir Alam Chowdhury alleged that the unrest was being fuelled by India. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India categorically rejects these "false and baseless allegations". "The interim government, which is unable to maintain law and order in Bangladesh, has routinely sought to shift the blame elsewhere," he said. "It would do well to introspect and conduct serious investigations into the action of local extremists committing violence, arson and land grab against the minority communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts," he added. Tensions escalated in Barabanki and Mau districts as protests over the "I Love Muhammad" campaign turned violent in Bareilly with police carrying out overnight house-to-house raids to nab the culprits and arresting a prominent cleric. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to set foot in Manipur on Saturday, over two years after a deadly ethnic violence swept the northeastern state, and unveil projects to the tune of Rs 8,500 crore, officials said. At least four people were killed in clashes over a rally organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP) on Wednesday in Gopalganj, the hometown of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, according to media reports. The hometown of Rahman, also known as Bangabandhu, turned into a virtual battlefield as hundreds of supporters of his daughter and deposed premier Sheikh Hasina clashed with police, ahead of the planned march of student-led NCP, Prothom Alo newspaper reported. Three of the deceased were identified as Dipto Saha (25), Ramazan Kazi (18) and Sohel Molla (41), the paper said. The deceased were brought to Gopalganj General Hospital with gunshot injuries, doctors said, adding that nine more people were being treated at the facility with bullet wounds. The situation in Manipur remained tense but under control on Wednesday after students clashed with security forces during their march to Raj Bhavan here a day before, police said. Curfew, which was imposed in the state's capital Imphal on Tuesday afternoon, continued to be in place this morning, while additional security forces were deployed and frequent patrolling by policemen was underway in the town to avoid any untoward incident, a senior officer said. Unidentified persons have vandalised a few shops in some areas of Maharashtra's Thane district, including Naya Nagar which witnessed a communal clash three days back, a police official said on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday night in Kashimira, Naya Nagar and Navghar areas of the district neighbouring Mumbai. A video which went viral on social media showed some persons on motorbikes throwing stones at the shops. The shops in these areas were damaged following which the police registered an FIR against unidentified persons, the official from Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police said. More than 50 persons were booked for a clash between two groups in Bhendi Bazar area of south Mumbai, a police official said on Saturday. The incident took place on Friday evening near Gol Deval Temple junction on Maulana Azad road during a procession, he said. Some persons attached a truck to the generator van and started playing loud music with sound amplifying equipment, popularly called DJ, and indulged in shouting slogans while one person also pelted a stone, the official said. A dispute between two groups over some issue triggered a clash and led to stone pelting in Maharashtra's Akola city, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday night in Bhimnagar and neighbouring Kadri Pura Chowk under Akot Fail police station limits following which security has been stepped up in the area, they said. Fourteen people from the two sides have been booked for rioting, the police said. A drunk person abused some people in Bhimnagar, leading to tension in the area, an official from Akot Fail police station said. The two groups then threw stones on some houses in the area, he said. After receiving information, personnel from the Akot Fail police station reached the spot and brought the situation under control, the official said. A fresh clash occurred at a disputed village along the Assam-Meghalaya interstate boundary as locals from both sides used bows and arrows and catapults to attack each other, officials said on Wednesday. However, no injuries were reported in the incident that took place in Lapangap village along the boundary between Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district and Assam's West Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday. The situation was brought under control after police teams from both states visited the spot and placated the locals. The situation remained calm but tense on Wednesday morning as police forces from both states prevented villagers from congregating at the spot where the clash occurred.
