Indian-origin professor Ganesh Thakur to lead Texas' top science academy

Indian-origin professor Ganesh Thakur has been named president of the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology (TAMEST), becoming the first University of Houston (UH) faculty member to hold the position. Thakur, a professor of petroleum engineering at UH's Cullen College of Engineering, began his term in February, the university said in a release. He aims to raise the visibility of UH's research and promote collaboration across top institutions in Texas. TAMEST brings together top minds from UH, UT Austin, Texas A&M, and others to tackle real-world challenges, Thakur said. TAMEST includes 350 members of the US National Academies and eight Nobel laureates. Its next annual conference, focused on climate change, will be held in San Antonio in February 2026. Thakur's term runs through 2027, during which he plans to position Houston as a national hub for science and innovation. 3,500 students join IIT-KGP event to promote scientific curiosity: Official

Over 3,500 students from 1,800 schools across India and several foreign countries participated in 'Young Innovators Programme' (YIP) 2025, an IIT Kharagpur event, and got a chance to see atoms, a spokesperson of the institute said on Saturday. For the first time in their life, students of classes 8-12 peered through the state-of-the-art high-resolution transmission electron microscope, installed at the Sophisticated Analytical & Technical Help Institutes (SATHI) centre, and saw atoms in all their intricate detail. The programme was hosted by the Students Branding and Relations Cell, IIT Kharagpur. EcoZen raises $23 mn from Northern Arc Capital, responsAbility, others

Climate-smart technology solutions provider Ecozen on Wednesday said it has raised over USD 23 million in debt funding from a bunch of investors including Zurich-based responsAbility Investments AG, Northern Arc Capital and Maanaveeya Development & Finance, among others. This investment will be utilised for scaling the company's flagship solutions, including Ecotron, Ecofrost, and advanced motor control systems, Ecozen said. Ecozen's product portfolio includes solar pump controllers and solar cold storage rooms as well as e-bike controllers for a range of industries and needs. Nearly 0.7% of GDP spent on R&D, strengthening of S&T infra from 2014-19

Nearly 0.7 per cent of the GDP was spent every year on research and development, including strengthening of science and technology infrastructure, during 2014-15 to 2018-19, Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday. In a written response to a question in Rajya Sabha, Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh said the Gross Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD) has been consistently following an increasing trend and during the last 10 years, the GERD of India in gross terms has increased by three times. However, the investments by the private sector to R&D have been inadequate. Unlike other advanced countries where more than 70 per cent contribution of GERD comes from the private sector, in India the private sector contribution to GERD is less than 40 per cent, he said.
