The Centre has approved the purchase of 1,000 electric buses for Pune under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, giving a major push to the city's public transport network, Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol said. The induction of the new e-buses is expected to bolster Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd's (PMPML) fleet, ease congestion and help curb vehicular pollution, the BJP MP from Pune said in a statement on Tuesday. The PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme emphasises providing affordable and environmentally friendly public transportation options for the masses. Mohol said Union Minister for Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy has granted the final approval to the proposal submitted by PMPML, which operates bus services in the city, Pimpri Chinchwad and adjoining areas under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The Odisha government on Friday said that the state ranks fifth in the country in green mobility, and the authorities have set an ambitious target to enhance its electric bus fleet to over 1,000 in the coming years. According to data, 14,329 e-buses are currently in operation across India, of which Delhi has the highest number of vehicles at 3,564, followed by Maharashtra (3,296), Karnataka (2,236), and Uttar Pradesh (850), according to an official statement. Odisha is in the fifth position among all states in the adoption of electric buses. Odisha has outpaced the neighbouring states in this field West Bengal (391), Andhra Pradesh (238), Chhattisgarh (215) and Jharkhand (46), it claimed. Delhi will receive more than 1,000 electric buses this month, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said. Singh, in an interview with PTI, said Delhi's transport sector is currently operating at a loss of Rs 235 crore. The minister said the government is working on a recovery plan and aims to turn the sector profitable within a year. "This month, we will bring more than 1,000 electric buses to Delhi," Singh said. Singh, who is among the six cabinet ministers in Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's government, took oath on February 20 after the BJP formed a government in Delhi for the first time in 26 years. JBM Auto Ltd's subsidiary JBM Ecolife Mobility on Wednesday announced securing an order worth Rs 5,500 crore for supply of 1,021 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme-2. These buses, which are to be delivered over a period of 18 months, will be deployed across 19 cities in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Haryana, JBM Ecolife Mobility said. The deployment period will, however, be for 12 years, it said. "The total order valued at approximately Rs 5,500 crore reinforces its leadership in the electric mobility space and aligns with India's vision for a cleaner and more sustainable public transport ecosystem," it said. The company has already deployed around 2,000 such e-buses in India, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The company's order book now stands at over 11,000 electric buses in various stages of execution. India needs investment worth USD 20-30 billion in the EV charging infrastructure to double the pace of growth of the segment, industry body IESA said on Thursday. It is a very niche segment which has just started picking up in the country, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) President Debi Prasad Dash said. Sharing his estimates, Dash said the EV charging infrastructure segment is growing at a rate of 25-30 per cent currently in India. To double this growth, investments worth USD 20-30 billion would be required, he said at the 'IESA India EV Fast Charging Summit' in the national capital. On PM E-Drive Scheme, Dash said "We (industry) all are waiting for the scheme to be floated. A few of the things the government is considering before outing the full scheme is they are trying to (figure out) state-wise demand allocation, considering the density of the vehicles in different localities in states and cities."
