Bruno Fernandes moved closer to breaking the Premier League 's assists record as Manchester United tightened its grip on Champions League qualification with a 3-1 win against Aston Villa on Sunday. Fernandes provided assists for two of United's goals to take his tally for the season to 16. The record for a single Premier League campaign is 20, with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne both reaching that mark. Fernandes has up to eight more games to set a new record in English soccer's top division. Of more importance to United was a seventh win in nine games under head coach Michael Carrick. United is third - three points clear of Villa in fourth. At the other end of the standings Nottingham Forest climbed out of the relegation zone with a 0-0 draw against Fulham. Crystal Palace and Leeds also drew 0-0.
Max Dowman, a 16-year-old Arsenal winger, became the Premier League's youngest ever scorer with a remarkable stoppage-time goal in his team's 2-0 win over Everton. Dowman collected the ball midway in his own half, dribbled around two Everton players and raced clear unchallenged from the halfway line to tap into an empty net, with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford stranded upfield having gone forward for a corner. An English soccer prodigy, Dowman - at 16 years, 73 days - was playing just his third Premier League match after two previous substitute appearances at the start of the season. "He doesn't seem to be fazed by the occasion or the moment or the context or the opponent, he just plays so naturally," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. "He makes decisions to make things happen, and what he delivered was incredible." Asked what he said to Dowman after deciding to bring him on, Arteta replied: "Go and do your thing and win us the game." Dowman broke the record of former Everton
Alexis Mac Allister just didn't give up. After having an 89th-minute goal disallowed following a VAR check, the Argentina midfielder scored again in the seventh minute of stoppage time - and this time it survived a video review - to earn Liverpool a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday. The dramatic end at the City Ground centered completely on Mac Allister, who thought he'd scored without knowing anything about it after turning his back on a clearance by Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina. The ball rebounded off Mac Allister and into the net, but the VAR spotted it had struck his arm and the goal was scrubbed out. However, he was on hand off virtually the last kick of the game when Virgil van Dijk's header was spilled by Forest goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. Barely six meters out, Mac Allister could hardly miss as he sidefooted the ball into the net. There was a VAR check to see if Van Dijk was offside but the goal was given. Liverpool stayed in sixth pla
Manchester United coach Michael Carrick said the Premier League club was proud of its culture after co-owner Jim Ratcliffe triggered a storm of criticism for claiming Britain had been "colonized" by immigrants. The British billionaire owner of petrochemicals giant INEOS later apologized that his choice of language had "offended some people." Ratcliffe's comments were condemned by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, along with a wide spectrum of political figures, as well as United fans proud of the diversity within the team and its supporter base. Carrick, who was hired as interim head coach, faced the media on Friday for the first time since Ratcliffe's remarks and he was asked for his response. "Sir Jim has made a statement, and then the club's made a statement on the back of it so for me to add to that is not my place," he said. "What I can say is, as I've been around this club many, many years, we always make a huge impact globally. "We're really proud of the environment and
Arsenal blew a two-goal lead at last-place Wolves to give a huge boost to Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title. The league leader was held to a surprise 2-2 draw at Molineux on Wednesday, having led 2-0 in the second half. Teenage debutant Tom Edozie scored in the fourth minute of added time to complete Wolves' comeback. "There was a big difference in how we played in the first half and the second half. We dropped our standards and we got punished for it," Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka told the BBC. The draw means Arsenal has dropped points in back-to-back games and leaves it just five ahead of second-place City, having played a game more. With the top two still to play each other at City's Etihad Stadium, the title race is too close to call. "(It's) time to focus on ourselves, improve our standards and improve our performances and it is in our control," Saka said. Arsenal has led the way for the majority of the season and one bookmaker paid out on Mikel Arteta
Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said Thursday that he's sorry if some have been offended by anti-immigrant comments. The billionaire co-owner of Manchester United faced criticism by both political leaders and fans after he said the U.K. had been "colonized'' by immigrants. Ratcliffe, the founder and chairman of chemicals maker Ineos, is one of Britain's richest people and an influential voice on politics and the economy. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Wednesday that the comments by Jim Ratcliffe were "offensive and wrong." Ratcliffe issued a statement on Thursday, saying that he was "sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the U.K. and Europe." Ratcliffe, who lives in the tax haven of Monaco, made the comments in a wide-ranging interview with Sky News in which he touched on the challenges facing the European chemicals industry, politics and the weakness of the U.K. economy. "You can't have an economy with 9 million people on benefits and huge level
Erling Haaland kept Manchester City's Premier League title hopes alive with a dramatic late penalty at Liverpool. The Norwegian struck in second-half stoppage time in an explosive game at Anfield on Sunday to seal a 2-1 win and cut the gap on first-place Arsenal back to six points. City's title prospects looked in dire shape when Dominik Szoboszlai crashed a stunning long-range free kick in off the post in the 74th minute. And even when Bernardo Silva equalized 10 minutes later, second-place City was still looking at ending the match eight points adrift. But Haaland sent the away fans wild by firing into the bottom corner from the spot in the 93rd after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson brought down Matheus Nunes in the box. "I was really nervous right beforehand. All my thoughts were getting in the back of the net," Haaland told Sky Sports. "Incredible feeling." Even after Haaland's goal, the drama was far from over. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a spectacular save to
