The Ministry of Education is working on a national examination-grade Computer-Based Testing (CBT) infrastructure strategy to ensure a seamless transition for the pen-and-paper-based entrance exam NEET to online mode, officials said. Following the NEET paper leak earlier this year, the Centre announced that the medical entrance exam will be conducted in CBT mode from next year. Officials, aware of the development, said that while the plan is under active consideration, they will make a final decision only after receiving the report from the Nandan Nilekani-led task force set up to overhaul India's public examination systems. While NEET has been conducted in pen-and-paper mode so far, the National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts several other exams, including the engineering entrance JEE-Main, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG and PG, and UGC-NET and CSIR UGC-NET, as computer-based tests. According to the report titled, leadership in the segment will depend on the operating model, not scale, faculty, or reach alone. "India's test preparation market is around USD 14.8 Bn in FY26, projected to reach USD 23-26 billion by FY30 at a 12-15 per cent CAGR," the report said. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having "completely destroyed" the country's education system and said the government has been unable to conduct even a single examination properly while making claims of being a "vishwaguru". The National Testing Agency has released revised examination dates and admit cards for the Common University Entrance Test 2026 for admissions in undergraduate programmes that were rescheduled from May 28 owing to Eid-ul-Azha. According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), the examinations will now be conducted on May 31, June 6 and June 7. The NTA said that admit cards for candidates appearing for the test on May 31 have been released and they can be downloaded from the official website cuet.nta.nic.in. The admit cards for June 6 and 7 will be released soon, the agency said. "Stay updated by checking the official website regularly," the NTA said. More than 2,42,000 candidates on Sunday appeared for the NEET-PG exam, which is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for admission to various post graduate medical courses. The exam was conducted in a single shift on the computer-based platform across 301 cities and in 1,052 test centres, official sources said. This is the largest computer-based exam in India in terms of number of candidates which has been conducted in a single shift. The NBEMS had engaged more than 2,200 faculty members from various medical colleges and accredited hospitals to ensure zero tolerance towards use of unfair means cases. The NBEMS had also written to the chief secretaries, DGPs of all the states to ensure adequate law and order, cyber security and uninterrupted power supply at all the test centres.
