'Homebound' brings Basti's story to Oscars, villagers await screening

Neeraj Ghaywan's "Homebound" has brought Mohammad Sayyub and Amrit Kumar's heartbreaking story to the global stage but the people of the village in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district are still waiting for a screening of the film. The movie, which had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May and has been chosen as India's official selection for the 2026 Academy Awards, is inspired by journalist Basharat Peer's The New York Times article Taking Amrit Home (A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway). It was released in theatres last month. The article narrated the true story of Amrit Kumar, a migrant worker from Devari village in Basti's Bankati block, who collapsed from heat stroke on a highway while returning home from Surat during the COVID-19 pandemic, and his friend Mohammad Saiyub refused to leave his side. While the film has received critical-acclaim in international festivals, residents of Devari say they are yet to see the movie. The nearest cinema hall is ab

She was 79. People Magazine reported Saturday that she died in California with loved ones, citing a family spokesperson. Keaton was the kind of actor who helped make films iconic and timeless, from her La-dee-da, la-dee-da phrasing as Annie Hall, bedecked in that necktie, bowler hat, vest and khakis, to her ...

Israel frees Oscar-winning Palestinian director held after settler attack

Israeli authorities released an Oscar-winning Palestinian director who was detained by the army after being attacked by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, who his wife said beat him in front of his home while filming the assault. Hamdan Ballal and the other directors of No Other Land, which looks at the struggles of living under Israeli occupation, had mounted the stage at the 97th Academy Awards in Los Angeles earlier this month when it won the award for best documentary film. Ballal and two other Palestinians detained with him were released Tuesday afternoon from a police station in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba. Ballal had bruises on his face and blood on his clothes, and the three were driven to a hospital in the neighboring Palestinian city of Hebron, according to Associated Press journalists at the scene. Their attorney, Lea Tsemel, said they spent the night on the floor of a military base while receiving only minimal care for their injuries from the ...

Emilia Prez tops Oscar nominations with 13, Wicked, The Brutalist get 10

In the wake of devastating wildfires in Los Angeles that struck at the heart of the movie industry, an embattled Hollywood lined up behind the Netflix narco-musical about trans identity Emilia Prez in Oscar nominations Thursday. Jacques Audiard's Emilia Prez, a Spanish language, French-made film, dominated the nominations with a leading 13 nominations, including best picture and best actress for Karla Sofa Gascn, making her the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar. The film also landed nominations for directing, original screenplay, two of its songs and for Zoe Saldaa. Netflix, despite its starring role in Hollywood, has never won best picture. Many of its top contenders have previously racked up large numbers of nominations (including Mank, The Irishman and Roma) but gone home with only a handful of trophies. Emilia Prez, though, may be its best chance yet. It became the most nominated non-English language film ever, surpassing Netflix's own Roma, which landed 10 ..
