Contractual employees of the Punjab Roadways and the Pepsu Road Transportation Corporation went on strike on Tuesday to press for their demands, including an increase in salaries. The strike left many passengers stranded at bus stands, including in Sangrur, Ludhiana and Patiala. Gurvinder Singh, secretary of the Punjab Roadways, Punbus, PRTC Contract Workers' Union, said they are staging demonstrations at all 27 bus stands in the state. The contractual employees are seeking from the state government, among others, a five per cent hike in their annual salaries. Singh said the hike was promised by the state government but not implemented. Waving black flags, the protesting employees raised slogans against the government and threatened to intensify their protest if their demands are not met. The Rajasthan government on Thursday announced a 50 per cent concession in fares for women passengers across classes of Rajasthan roadways buses. So far, the concession was limited to ordinary (blue line) buses. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has approved a proposal to provide 50 per cent concession in fares to women passengers across classes of Rajasthan roadways buses within the state limits, an official spokesperson said. Gehlot had announced in the 2023-24 budget that the concession in fares for women passengers in ordinary roadways buses would be increased from 30 to 50 per cent. This was implemented from April 1. At the inauguration of the bus terminal at Sindhi Camp here on May 25, the chief minister had announced that the concession would also be extended to Rajasthan roadways' buses.
Nineteen passengers were injured on Sunday when an Uttarakhand Roadways bus fell into a gorge while travelling from Mussoorie to Dehradun, police said. According to police, the accident occurred near the ITBP camp. The injured were pulled out of the 70-metre deep gorge and rushed to a hospital where the condition of three is said to be serious. The accident took place apparently after the brakes of the bus failed, police said. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief at the accident and asked officials to make all arrangements for the treatment of the injured.
Truck operators at two Adani group-owned cement plants at Bilaspur and Solan districts returned to work after 68 days of strike following an agreement over the freight rates. Truckers were on strike after the closure of two cement plants in Bilaspur and Solan by Adani group-owned ACC and Ambuja Cements. The deadlock between the cement company management and truck operators ended on Monday after both the management of the Adani cement plants (Barmana in Bilaspur and Darlaghat in Solan) and the representatives of the truck unions agreed to the new freight rate of Rs 10.30 per kilometre per tonne for single axle and Rs 9.30 per kilometre per tonne for multi-axle during a meeting held here chaired by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Truck operators on Tuesday called the General House in Darlaghat to discuss the CM's announcement regarding freight rates. In this, a proposal was made regarding the new rate, which has been accepted unanimously. Hundreds of people from eight societies
