Three injured in shooting at Oklahoma State University residence hall

A shooting at an Oklahoma State University residence hall wounded at least three people early Sunday morning, according to a university spokesperson. Police said there was no ongoing threat to campus. Initial reports indicate the shooting happened when people arrived at the residence hall after attending a large private party off-campus, university police said. Officers responded at about 3:40 am. University police Chief Michael Beckner said in a statement posted online that there were multiple victims, one of whom was known to be a student at the school. A university spokesperson said at least three people were shot. All were being treated at hospitals. Police became aware of the shooting at Carreker East residence hall after shooting victims arrived at off-campus locations and reported the incident. The university is located in the city of Stillwater, about 50 miles (80 kilometres) northeast of Oklahoma City.

Lawyers seek dismissal of federal charges in UnitedHealthcare CEO murder

Lawyers for Luigi Mangione asked a New York federal judge Saturday to dismiss some criminal charges, including the only count for which he could face the death penalty, from a federal indictment brought against him in the December assassination of UnitedHealthcare's chief executive. In papers filed in Manhattan federal court, the lawyers said prosecutors should also be prevented from using at trial his statements to law enforcement officers and his backpack where a gun and ammunition were found. They said Mangione was not read his rights before he was questioned by law enforcement officers, who arrested him after Brian Thompson was fatally shot as he arrived at a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. They added that officers did not obtain a warrant before searching Mangione's backpack. Mangione, 27, has pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges in the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson on December 4 as he arrived at a Manhattan hotel for his company's annual investor ...

4 dead in Houston-area shootings at separate locations, including suspect

A man is believed to have fatally shot three people at two different locations in the Houston area before killing himself on Wednesday, said police, who are still trying to determine a motive for the shootings. Early indications are that it's all related, Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Crowson said. Around 1 pm, a driver in the Houston suburb of Sugar Land fired multiple shots at another vehicle, hitting its driver, who was pronounced dead at a hospital, said Alicia Alaniz, a spokesperson for the city police. Police are still trying to determine if the shooting was an instance of road rage, Alaniz said. About half an hour later, Houston police received a call about a shooting at a mechanic shop about 11 kilometres southeast of the first shooting. Crowson said the shooter shot a mechanic and a witness who was filming him as he was leaving. The description of the shooter and the vehicle he was in matched the accounts from the Sugar Land shooting, Crowson said. Police found the

ABC suspends Jimmy Kimmel's show indefinitely over remarks on Kirk's death

ABC has suspended Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show indefinitely after comments that he made about Charlie Kirk's killing led a group of ABC-affiliated stations to say it would not air the show. Kimmel, the veteran late-night comic, made several comments about the reaction to Kirk's assassination on his show Monday and Tuesday nights. He said that many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalise on the murder of Charlie Kirk. ABC, which has aired Kimmel's late-night show since 2003, moved swiftly after Nextstar Communications Group said it would pull the show starting Wednesday. Kimmel's comments about Kirk's death are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, said Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar's broadcasting division. Nexstar operates 23 ABC affiliates. There was no immediate comment from Kimmel. On Twitter Wednesday night, White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich posted: Welcome to Consequence Culture. Normal, common sense

Trump admin joins Republican campaign to police speech after Kirk's murder

Vice President JD Vance on Monday jumped onto the conservative movement demanding consequences for those who have cheered Charlie Kirk's killing, calling on the public to turn in anyone who says distasteful things about the assassination of his friend and political ally. "When you see someone celebrating Charlie's murder, call them out," Vance urged listeners on the slain activist's podcast Monday. "And hell, call their employer." Vance's call also included a vow to target some of the biggest funders of liberal causes as conservatives stepped up their targeting of private individuals for their comments about the killing. It marked an escalation in a campaign that some warned invoked some of the darkest chapters of American history. "The government involvement in this does inch this closer to looking like McCarthyism," said Adam Goldstein of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, referring to the 1950s campaign to root out communists that led to false allegations and ..

National Guard not needed to curb gun violence: Maryland leaders tell Trump

In a pointed show of solidarity against US President Donald Trump, state and local leaders walked through one of Baltimore's most historically underserved neighbourhoods on Friday evening amid ongoing efforts to curb gun violence. Those efforts are working, Governor Wes Moore said. Homicides in Baltimore have reached historic lows with sustained declines starting 2023. He said the last thing Baltimore needs is the National Guard presence Trump has threatened. We do not need occupiers, Moore said to a crowd of law enforcement officers, anti-violence advocates, local clergy and other community leaders who gathered in northwest Baltimore's Park Heights neighbourhood. Moore wrote a letter to the president last month inviting him to visit Baltimore and see its recent success firsthand. Officials attribute the progress to their crime-fighting strategies, which include social services meant to address the root causes of violence. In an escalating feud over public safety, Trump responded

Shooter kills three in Austin Target parking lot before arrest: Police

A gunman opened fire in the parking lot of a Target store in Texas' capital, killing at least three people, before stealing two cars during a getaway that ended with police using a Taser to detain him on the other side of the city, authorities said. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the suspect is a man in his 30s with a mental health history. Davis said the suspect fled the scene in a stolen car, wrecked that car and then stole another from a dealership. He was captured about 32 km away, in south Austin, where he was taken into custody, she said during a news conference. She said officers responding to a call about 2.15 pm on Monday found three people who had been shot in the Target parking lot. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services Chief Robert Luckritz said two people were pronounced dead at the scene and one person was taken to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. He said another person was treated on the scene for unrelated injuries. This is a very sad day

Suspected gunman, cop dead in shooting near CDC and Emory University

A suspected gunman and a police officer are dead after law enforcement responded to reports of an active shooter near the adjoining campuses of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University on Friday, authorities said. No civilians are believed to have been injured, but several rounds hit buildings on the CDC's sprawling campus, said Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum. The officer who died received gunfire during the shooting, DeKalb County Police Chief Gregory Padrick said. Officials earlier said that the officer was critically injured at the scene and taken to the hospital. CDC employees circulated photos from inside the buildings that appear to show numerous windows with bullet impacts in them. The shooter was armed with a long gun, and authorities recovered three other firearms at the scene, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the ongoing investigation. The gunma

Republican tax bill to ease rules on gun silencers, some rifles, shotguns

The massive tax and spending cuts package that President Donald Trump wants on his desk by July 4 would loosen regulations on gun silencers and certain types of rifles and shotguns, advancing a longtime priority of the gun industry as Republican leaders in the House and Senate try to win enough votes to pass the bill. The guns provision was first requested in the House by Georgia Rep. Andrew Clyde, a Republican gun store owner who had initially opposed the larger tax package. The House bill would remove silencers called suppressors by the gun industry from a 1930s law that regulates firearms that are considered the most dangerous, eliminating a $200 tax while removing a layer of background checks. The Senate kept the provision on silencers in its version of the bill and expanded upon it, adding short-barreled, or sawed-off, rifles and shotguns. Republicans who have long supported the changes, along with the gun industry, say the tax infringes on Second Amendment rights. They say .

Army Secretary Driscoll replaces Kash Patel as acting head of ATF

FBI Director Kash Patel was quietly removed weeks ago as the acting chief of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and has been replaced with the Army secretary, three people familiar with the matter have said. It was not immediately clear why Patel was replaced by Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll to lead the Justice Department agency that's responsible for enforcing the nation's gun laws. One person familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a personnel move, said on Wednesday that Patel was removed at the end of February, just days after he was sworn in. But that was never publicly announced. Patel remains on the agency's website and was identified as the acting director in an April 7 press release. Senior ATF leaders were only informed Wednesday of the change, according to another person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the move. Driscoll will remain secretary of the Army, according to a

3 shot, killed outside Louisville, Kentucky, motor vehicle office: Police

Three people were shot and killed outside a motor vehicle office in Louisville on Friday, police said. Officers were called to the office around noon and found a man dead and two women wounded in the parking lot, according to a statement from the Louisville Metro Police Department. The two wounded were taken to the hospital, where they died. Numerous police responded to the shooting at a state Driver Licensing Office on the southern outskirts of Louisville. Police evidence markers were set on the ground around an area about 20 feet from the entrance to the building Friday afternoon. Police Maj. Donald Boeckman said the shooter left in a vehicle. Boeckman did not have a description of the vehicle and said investigators were still reviewing surveillance video. "It's absolutely a tragedy, and I'm surprised there wasn't more people injured," Boeckman said. He said police believe there is not an ongoing threat to the public. Police did not know if the victims were connected, Boeckman .

Banning gun sales to young adults under 21 unconstitutional, says US court

A US appeals court on Thursday ruled against a federal law requiring young adults to be 21 to buy handguns, finding it violated the Second Amendment. The ruling, handed down by a panel of three judges on the conservative 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, comes amid major shifts in the national firearm legal landscape following a landmark US Supreme Court decision that expanded gun rights in 2022. The court found that people aged 18-to-20 should not be prohibited from buying guns. Ultimately, the text of the Second Amendment includes eighteen-to-twenty-year-old individuals among the people' whose right to keep and bear arms is protected, the court wrote in their ruling. The ruling sends the case back to a lower court judge. In the past, the appeals court has upheld the age restriction. However, since the Supreme Court's ruling that said firearm restrictions must be rooted in the nation's historical traditions, judges in states like Minnesota, Virginia and Texas have ..
