Bird Group, a technology provider to the Indian travel industry, is targeting to sell around 600 Segways, a two-wheeled, self-balancing battery electric vehicle, in India during the current calendar year.

The over $150-million company, which is an exclusive dealership for Segway, invented by US-based scientist Dean Kamen and now being produced by Segway Inc of New Hampshire, has sold close to 75 units in India over the last two years, including two to Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan.  At present, Delhi international airport is using Segways in policing terminals and traffic. “Sectors, especially, airports, hospitality, retail and leisure and travel in India have started realising the multifold revenue models that Segway offers to their businesses. We see a huge potential for Segways in India, and are primarily targeting hotels that are exempted from duties,” Rony Abraham, head (sales), Segway India, told Business Standard.
