German car maker Volkswagen today launched its much-anticipated hatchback Polo in the Indian market at a price ranging between Rs 4.34 lakh and Rs 6.70 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi).

The new car will be available with a 1.2 litre engine in both petrol and diesel variants, the company's Indian subsidiary said in a statement.

"India is a key market for our overall strategic growth plans and with launch of the New Polo, it affirms our commitment to offer the best quality products to our Indian customers at affordable prices," Volkswagen Group Sales India Board Member Neeraj Garg said.

The company has pitted the small car against Maruti Suzuki's Swift and Ritz, Hyundai's i10 and i20, and Honda's Jazz.

While the petrol variant of the small car will come at a price starting from Rs 4.34 lakh, the diesel one has a base price tag of Rs 5.32 lakh.

The delivery of the petrol variant will begin from March, while the diesel variant will hit the roads in May.

The company had earlier showcased the Polo during the Delhi Auto Expo in January. It is being manufactured at the company's Chakan plant in Maharashtra.

"The new Polo is a key player in our ongoing strategy to establish our brand presence in India. We are confident this offering will set a new benchmark in its segment," Volkswagen Chief General Manager (Marketing and PR) Lutz Kothe said.
