India's defence research agency, defence research and development organisation (DRDO) has got J Manjula as its first woman director general for its electronics and communications systems cluster.
Manjula was heading the Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), the agency's arm that makes complex computers to man fighter planes such as the Sukhoi MK I and Tejas, the homegrown light combat aircraft.
An alumni of Osmania University, Manjula has designed fast signal acquisition receivers, high power RF systems, responsive jammers, controller software etc for various systems inducted in Army, Navy, Air Force and Paramilitary.
An electronics and communications engineer, Manjula had worked on electronic warfare and communication systems. She worked in Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, (DLRL) Hyderabad for 26 years and had a brief stint at Electronics Corporation of India before joining the defence agency.
Manjula has worked closely with the Indian industry, academia and firms abroad. he is a recipient of DRDO award for 'Performance Excellence' and 'Scientist of the Year 2011, said a statement.
