Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Chief M Karunanidhi announced that he would be seeking a re-election from Thiruvarur constituency. The veteran political leader has had a very successful record in terms of getting elected from a constituency. AIADMK’s ANR Paneerselvam is likely to be pitted against him.

Strengths

The DMK chief has won 12 elections in his political career so far. The party veteran’s impressive track record is likely to help him this time as well. Whether or not his party will win the overall elections in the state will be known later, but it is almost certain that he would retain this seat. Comparatively, Paneerselvam is a newcomer and being pitched against such a giant may not work in his favour.

Weaknesses

In case an anti-incumbency factor is in play, then it could be alarm bells for Karunanidhi. However, given the history of politics in the state, with power shuffling between two entities, thereby suggesting how the electorate may not be looking at a change of face, the chances of this factor is less likely.
