Letters: BJP's ball game

Image

Business Standard New Delhi
This refers to the editorial "Manifesto let-down" (April 8). Unlike 2004, when the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-I came to power, the new government in 2014, in all probability led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will be in an unenviable position. If the UPA leaves office, then it will leave a huge burden of implementing "food security" on the incoming government. The fiscal deficit and current account deficit cannot be controlled without cutting subsidies, a decision no political party will risk taking. It's good the BJP, unlike the Congress, doesn't have an obsession with the idea that foreign direct investment (FDI) is the only remedy for our economic ills. Its aim of re-railing the economy by boosting the domestic industry and allowing FDI only in selected areas will ensure sustained growth.
