The Delhi High Court today directed SDMC to start constructing, from tomorrow garbage dumps at 18 sites identified by the municipal body and DDA in Dwarka.

A bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Siddharth Mridul issued the direction after it was informed by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) that they have identified 18 sites but handing it over to the civic body will take two more months as approvals for same are pending.

On the issue of cleaning and improving the service lanes in the sub-city, DDA said the process is underway and sought more time to file a status report as work of 16 engineering divisions have to be collated.

The bench granted DDA time till next date of hearing, in January, to file the status report as well as to ensure that the service lanes are "fully functional".

On the issue of maintenance of cleanliness in the sub-city, the court directed SDMC to maintain the standards after the PIL petitioner Ebbani Aggarwal, a law student and a resident of Dwarka, claimed that the situation has deteriorated.

SDMC assured the court that cleanliness standards would be maintained and if the same declines, concerned officials will be taken to task.

On the issue of who owns the land beneath the metro wire ducts, DDA and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation claimed the ownership.

Due to the dispute, the court directed DDA and DMRC to file a joint status report.

On the last date of hearing on November 12, the court had directed DDA and SDMC to to jointly inspect different sites in Dwarka to locate an appropriate place for making closed 'dhalaos' where garbage could be dumped by the residents.

The court had also sought status reports on service lanes in Dwarka and asked SDMC to ensure cleanliness of the same.

The court was hearing a plea by Aggarwal seeking a direction to the civic agencies to clean up the sub-city of Dwarka.
