In an attempted case of honour killing, a couple were shot at and seriously injured in Shamli district today.
Mohsin, 22, and his wife Farah, 20, were shot at by the girl's uncle Zahid as he objected to their love marriage, at Santa Rasul village under Thana Bhawan police station.
Circle officer Sunil Kumar said here that the girl's uncle, who is also a member of the district panchayat, had called them to his house and opened fire on the couple as he opposed their relationship.
The victims were shifted to hospital in serious condition. Police registered a case against Zahid who is absconding.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened in the village and extra police deployed to ease the tension.
