Fire in garbage site of private tyre factory

A fire today broke out in a garbage site of a private tyre factory near Melur, 30 km from here, throwing up thick black smoke, police said.

The fire, which broke out at 02:30hrs, was contained after an over 11-hour battle by more than 100 fire service personnel from ten units including Madurai and Melur.

Some people in nearby areas complained of breathing problem and eye irritation due to the thick smoke, forcing some of them to leave their homes, police said.

Papers, empty plastic cans and worn out tyres among other things had been stored on a large-scale in the garbage site.
 

Melur police said tyre company officials had not given any complaint and they were maintaining that only garbage had been lost.
