The Goa Cabinet today approved an amendment to the existing Tourism policy allowing transfer of beach shacks from the original lessee to the legal heir.

"There were instances that shack licences were in the name of deceased owners and it could not be transferred to another person as per the Tourism policy. The Cabinet today approved an amendment to the law so that the legal heir can own the licence after death of the original owner," Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar told reporters after chairing the State Cabinet meeting.

He said the transfer from the deceased to the legal heir has to be done after "careful consideration of facts by the Director of Tourism."

The beach shacks are erected on the state's coastline during the tourism season after prior permission from the Tourism department.

The licences for a three-year term were allotted in 2013 which will expire in 2016.

Parsekar said the state government had amended the Tourism policy in 2013 providing a three-year term for the beach shack licences.

"However it has been now reported that some of the shacks allottees who were issued this license are no more and their family members have requested for transfer of such shacks in the name of their next kins," the Chief Minister said.

"The cases of such deceased shack allottees need to be looked at sympathetically as their entire families were depending on the shack business," he said.
