With the retail price of onion shooting up to Rs 80 a kg, Congress today warned the government that if it failed to rein in the price line, it would be in for trouble.

"Those who don't learn from history, they suffer," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters recalling that the BJP had lost power in some states some 15 years ago due to rising onion prices.

Expressing concerns that the food items inflation has doubled since July, he said, prices of onions and pulses have touched astronomical figures.

"You are squeezing the Aam Aadmi!," he said, asking the government to stop "grand announcements" and get to nitty- gritty to ameliorate the plight of the common man.

Merely saying that wholesale price index has come down would not help, he added.
