India announces 1 million dollar

The sixth Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) Ministerial Meeting was held here today and was attended by leaders of delegation from the five countries of Mekong region, namely Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who chaired the meeting, said the forum will expand partnership to new areas of collaboration and has the potential to become a "powerful catalyst" for socio-economic development in the region.

"Our unanimous decision to henceforth meet on an annual basis is indicative of our recognition of the tremendous potential for future cooperation in this forum," Krishna said.

The Mekong-Ganga Cooperation initiative was launched in Vientiane, Lao PDR, in 2000 by India and the five countries from Mekong region to build cooperation in the region defined by two rivers - the Mekong and the Ganga. (more)
