An inmate of the Jaipur central jail has alleged in a court that he was beaten up prison staff, prompting authorities to order a probe into the matter today.

"Imran (35), sentenced to ten years in prison in a number of cases, alleged that he was beaten up by jail authorities," DGP (Jail) Ajit Singh said.

The incident came to light when he was produced in a local court yesterday. Pictures showing names of a jail staff and a jailor engraved on his back by a sharp-edged weapon went viral on social media after Imran appeared in the court.

DIG (Jail) Sarwar Khan has been asked to find out whether Imran was beaten up by other inmates in his ward or by jail staff and why, Singh said.

Preliminary examination and evidence revealed that he himself inflicted wounds with the help of his ward inmate, he said.

His relatives made allegation against jail authorities to gain sympathy of the court and media, the DIG said.

The court has sought a medical report of Imran, the DGP said.
