Delhi police have arrested a 44-year-old man who had allegedly duped several persons on the pretext of providing them government jobs and was also wanted in a murder case in Mumbai.
Hitesh Gandhi alias G H Navneet, a resident of Kandivali, Mumbai was arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi police when a car he was travelling in, was intercepted at Shiva Market, Pitam Pura.
Fake stickers of Rajya Sabha, Parliament of India and government of Gujarat were found pasted on the vehicle. Police have also recovered several other fake identity cards from him in his name identifying him as top government officials.
"We had received tip off about presence of a conman in Delhi, who is also wanted in a murder case in Mumbai. It was told that he is using various important documents and fake IDs of Parliament of India for cheating the people and he may misuse these forged documents, which is likely to pose a threat to the security," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
During interrogation, he claimed to have worked from 1993 to 2001 as PRO in film industry in Mumbai. He further claimed to have worked from 2001 to 2003 as PRO of Nationalist Congress Party. According to Hitesh he came to Delhi in 2003, and worked with former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma.
The accused said he later became General Secretary of All India Trinamool Youth Wing. From 2004 to 2007, Hitesh claimed that he worked as party convener of Rashtriya Janata Dal. From 2007 to 2009, he worked in the film industry, police said.
Hitesh had taken Rs 3 lakh from Rohit Singh to help him get a job in the Indian Railways. Singh asked Hitesh to return to amount as he did not get the job.
"On April 28, 2009 Gandhi accompanied by film publicist Ramesh Kerur and journalist Jyoti Venkatesh were travelling in a car in Mumbai. Singh and his cousin Abhimanyu intercepted them and stood in front of the vehicle to demand back their money.
"Gandhi ran the vehicle over Singh, who died on the spot while his cousin was injured. They fled from the spot, after leaving the vehicle abandoned," said Yadav.
Later, his accomplices Harish Bhandari, Ramesh Kerur and Jyoti Venkatesh were arrested by Mumbai Police but Hitesh went under-ground, shifted his base to Delhi and changed his name to G H Navneet, he said.
During his stay in Mumbai, Hitesh got married to a Bangalore based woman. However, after coming to Delhi, he married a widow and started living with her. Hitesh was using the vehicle owned by the lady, when he was arrested, police said.
