Man held with 1.25 lakh Saudi Riyals at Hyderabad airport

A passenger at the international airport here was held after Saudi Riyals, worth Rs 22 lakh, were seized from his possession which he was allegedly trying to export illegally, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said today.

Based on specific intelligence, officers of DRI (Hyderabad Zonal unit), intercepted the passenger at the airport, who after having cleared immigration and security checks was to board a flight to Dubai last night, a release from DRI said.

"On examination of his check-in baggage, foreign currency in the form of 1,25,000 Saudi Riyals was found," it said.

During interrogation the man stated that the currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers and does not belong to him and he was carrying the currency at the behest of someone for delivery in Dubai, according to the release.
 

"As the seized foreign currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers in violation of FEMA and regulations made thereunder and was attempted to be exported illegally, in contravention of the prohibition imposed under Customs Act, the foreign currency worth Rs 22 lakh in Indian rupees was seized," the release stated.

Further investigation in the case is on.
