Mufti reviews J-K security situation at first UC meeting

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today reviewed the security situation in the state at the first Unified Command Meeting of his government and called for holding a civil-military conference to iron out various issues including AFSPA.

The meeting, chaired by the chief minister at his residence, was attended by GOC-in-C of Northern Command Lt D S Hooda, Chief Secretary Iqbal Khanday, Director General of Police K Rajendra Kumar, Home Secretary Suresh Kumar, Army corps commanders, inspector generals of BSF and CRPF, and senior officers of the Central intelligence agencies among others.

"The chief minister made a strong pitch for holding a civil-military conference to iron out all the issues with the armed forces including AFSPA," a senior official said.
 

The issues to be taken up in the meeting include: AFSPA, land compensation, vacation of buildings under army's possession, vacation of land other than that allotted to army and human rights issues.

He urged the army to undertake coordinated, actionable and intelligence-based operations to avoid collateral damages during anti-terrorist operations.

"It was the first meeting headed by the new chief minister. General situation was reviewed and routine issues were discussed," the officer said.

The attendees deliberated on issues relating to the internal and external security situation in the State. Security officials representing different agencies briefed the meeting about the measures taken on different fronts to safeguard the frontiers and maintain internal order.

The officials gave a gist of security situation in all the border areas, along IB, LoC and LAC and discussed issues relating to cross border movements and infiltration attempts across the IB and LoC.

Sayeed sought cooperation from army, police and the civil administration in creating a peaceful environment.

The chief minister emphasised on the need to adopt a humane approach while dealing with law-and-order situations and exercising zero tolerance towards violations of human rights.

On the issue of firing in border areas from across the border, the chief minister called for enhanced vigil and asked the administration to provide shelter and all basic facilities to the people displaced in the firing.
