The byepass on Nawanshahr-Banga Road is expected to come up soon as the officials of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) today asked the district administration to publish notices to acquire land for the purpose, an official said.
The byepass would be constructed as part of four-laning of Ropar-Phagwara road and the stretch has been named as NH344-A, the NHAI official said.
The byepass will be nearly 10 km long and will start from Langroya and culminate at village Mahalon before passing through villages like Sauna, Kulam, Mehndipur and Gujjarpur.
The entire process of acquiring land would be completed within 2-3 months, he said.
The byepass would have two bridges-one on the Garhshankar Road, to be constructed by NHAI and the other, a flyover on the railway track near Gujjarpur, to be constructed by the railway authorities.
He said the entire four-laning project would entail a cost of over Rs 1,200 crore. The byepass was expected to be completed by December 2017 and it would be under EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) mode under which the entire cost is borne by the government.
The first foundation stone of the byepass was laid way back in 1996 by then Chief Minister H S Brar. Afterwards, another foundation stone was laid by Amarinder Singh during his tenure as CM in 2006.
It is expected to ease traffic congestion in Nawanshahr and its surrounding areas to a considerable extent.
