Long queues to get valid currency notes were witnessed outside banks and ATMs today after the Centre last week demonetised the old higher value bills, even as citizens voiced concern over the decision to mark customers exchanging defunct banknotes with indelible ink.
Banks witnessed more crowd as many ATMs ran out of cash, while serpentine queues were seen outside those which were dispensing money.
Political parties, including DMK and VCK, have opposed the Centre's decision to mark bank customers with indelible ink to check people coming back again and again.
The government's this move came in the wake of some people reportedly trying to convert black money into white and having organised groups of people and sending them from one branch to another to exchange notes.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) staged protests at different parts of the state, including here, slamming the Centre on the demonetisation issue, claiming it has affected the common man severely.
CPI(M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan and hundreds of party workers were taken into custody during protests in different parts of the state including Chennai, Tirunelveli and Dindigul.
Ramakrishnan and others were taken into custody for trying to picket the RBI office here.
