Police stop NSUI bike rally

The Congress-affiliated National Students' Union Of India took out a bike rally from Panchkula to Delhi on Tuesday which was stopped by the police at the Singhu border, the union said.

The rally was held to assert the demand of having a joint parliamentary committee probe the Rafale deal.

The rally, organised by Sunny Mehta, in-charge of Haryana NSUI, started in Panchkula in the morning and was supposed to culminate at Jantar Mantar around 3.00 pm but Mehta claimed they were detained by the police, lathicharged and their bikes damaged. However, the police denied the allegations.

Around 100 to 150 NSUI members reached the Singhu border, said a senior police officer. They wanted to cross the border on their motorcycles, the officer said adding that the police requested them to take a bus.

 

"Allowing motorcycles would have caused traffic congestion and worsened the situation in the city. Police did not use any force. We handled it with patience as it was a sensitive issue.

They were not detained. They held a symbolic protest at the border and dispersed later," he added.
