Armed men barged into the house of an agriculture officer and allegedly shot dead his son when he resisted their robbery attempt in the wee hours today on the outskirts of the city.

The five unidentified men held the family hostage and reportedly looted cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees in Vivek Vihar area of the city, ADGP (law and order) Ram Singh Meena said.

As the criminals barged into the house of Agriculture Officer Surinder Singh Thapaliyal, his son Ankit, an engineering graduate, woke up and raised an alarm.

A scuffle ensued and the burglars opened fire killing Ankit on the spot, the police officer said.

Thapaliyal and his wife have been admitted to CMI hospital here for treatment in a distraught condition.

No arrests have so far been made in this connection, he said.
