Day temperatures in Gangetic West Bengal today crossed the 40 degrees Celsius mark, six degrees above normal but the weatherman kept up hopes with forecast of possibility of rain or thunderstorm in some parts of the region in the next 24 hours.

Bankura recorded the day's highest temperature in the state at 40.7 degrees Celsius, the MeT department said.

The day's highest temperature in Kolkata was recorded at 40.4 degrees Celsius, but high humidity level at 88 per cent raised the discomfort level.
