Maharashtra Government will immediately remove all abandoned vehicles parked on streets of neighbouring Thane city, the Bombay High Court was informed today.
The high court disposed of a PIL seeking action in this regard following this assurance by state government.
Public Prosecutor Aruna Pai made a statement that Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vikram Patil had given an undertaking to the government that his department would remove all abandoned vehicles from the Thane streets.
Taking the statement on record, a bench headed by Justice P V Hardas disposed of a PIL alleging apathy on part of authorities in not removing these vehicles from public places thereby causing nuisance to people.
The PIL, filed by former Mayor Ashok Vaiti, said the authorities were violating section 127 of Motor Vehicles Act by allowing abandoned vehicles to remain on streets and sought the court's directions.
Vaiti said he had written at least 20 letters of protest to Thane Municipal Corporation and police authorities in this regard but his plea had fallen on deaf ears. Being aggrieved, he filed a PIL in the high court.
Vaiti's counsel V P Patil today made an oral plea to allow parking of vehicles on both sides of the roads on alternate days. However, the court did not consider his plea as the PIL had talked about only abandoned vehicles parked on roads.
