Food production in Haryana grew by 12.6 per cent during 1996-97 to 114.55 lakh tonnes. In 1995-96, food production in the state was at 101.72 lakh tonnes.

This has been highlighted in the Economic Survey of Haryana for 1997-98, which was released during the recently concluded winter session of the state assembly.

According to the survey, the state government has fixed a target of 115 lakh tonnes for 1997-98.

Haryana produced 78.32 lakh tonnes of wheat during 1996-97 against 72.91 lakh tonnes in 1995-96. The state government has set a wheat production target of 78.50 lakh tonnes for 1997-98.

Rice production too was buoyant. It rose from 18.47 lakh tonnes in 1995-96 to 24.66 lakh tonnes in 1996-97. The 1997-98 target has been fixed at 24.60 lakh tonnes.

The state is also doing well in production of sugarcane and oilseeds.

Sugarcane production in the state increased from 8.09 lakh tonnes in 1995-96 to 9.06 lakh tonnes in 1996-97. The 1997-98 target has been pegged at 9.50 lakh tonnes.

Production of oilseeds increased from 7.83 lakh tonnes in 1995-96 to 9.93 lakh tonnes in 1996-97. The 1997-98 target for oilseeds production has been fixed at 10 lakh tonnes.

But, the state put up a dismal performance in the production of pulses. Production declined from 4.51 lakh tonnes in 1995-96 to 3.43 lakh tonnes in 1996-97. The state government has now fixed a target of 5.45 lakh tonnes for pulses in 1997-98.
