Gujarat Alkalies & Nalco to set up caustic soda plant in Dahej

Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL) and National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco) have signed an agreement on June 23, 2015 for the formation of a joint venture to manufacture caustic soda. As per the agreement, the JV will set up a 800 tonnes per day (TPD) caustic soda plant and a 80-90 MW coal-based captive power plant (CPP) at Dahej, Gujarat. Nalco would have 40 per cent stake in the project with the balance equity held by Gujarat Alkalies.
 
The project, is being taken up as a backward integration initiative of Nalco, is estimated to cost Rs 1,789 crore. Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide, is used in the manufacturing process of aluminium.
   
The JV agreement was signed on June 23, 2015 by N R Mohanty, chairman cum managing director, Nalco and A M Tiwari, managing director, GACL.
