NZ vs SA T20 Tri-series Final full scorecard
Matt Henry’s heroics with the ball after Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway’s brilliant batting performance helped New Zealand to beat South Africa in the tri-series final by 3 runs to lift the trophy. New Zealand, with this win, remained 5-0 in the series while South Africa’s only two wins came against Zimbabwe.
Earlier, South African skipper Rassie van der Dussen won the toss and opted to bat first. The Kiwis accepted the offer with grace as Tim Seifert and Devon Conway gave them a fiery start in the opening. The duo added 52 runs without loss in the powerplay to give New Zealand the perfect start. They took the opening stand to 75 before Senuran Muthusamy removed Tim Seifert (30) to hand Proteas their first breakthrough.
Devon Conway (47) then continued to steer NZ ahead with Rachin Ravindra but lost his wicket to Lungi Ngidi just three short of a half-century. Mark Chapman (3) failed to get going and also lost his wicket to Ngidi as New Zealand lost two in quick succession.
Rachin Ravindra (47) also followed the same path of Conway and played some big shots before losing his wicket to Burger, just three short of a half-century. Michael Bracewell (15) lost his wicket in the final over off Kwena Maphaka, but Daryl Mitchell (16 not out) and skipper Santner (3 not out) added some useful runs in the end as New Zealand finished their innings at 180 for 5.
In reply, South Africa followed the same blueprint as New Zealand and added 46 runs without any loss in the powerplay to start the chase in a steady manner. Lhuan-dre Pretorius (51) brought up his maiden T20I half-century and added 92 runs for the first wicket with Hendricks before losing his wicket to Bracewell in the 10th over. Reeza Hendricks (37) then took Proteas’ total past 100 before losing his wicket to Foulkes. Despite losing their wickets, the openers set the game in South Africa’s favour before going back.
But New Zealand got the wickets of Rassie van der Dussen (18) and Rubin Hermann (11) on back-to-back deliveries as they kept themselves alive in the match. Dewald Brevis (31) tried to get South Africa over the line but lost his wicket in the final over, leaving South Africa needing 7 off 4 balls. Corbin Bosch took a double and a single off the next two balls as the required scenario was down to 4 off 2. Matt Henry then removed George Linde (10) on the penultimate ball and bowled a dot ball on the final ball as South Africa finished with 177 for 6 — just 3 short of New Zealand’s total — as they lost the game in the defining moments.
