Gujarat Giants, with the help of a second consecutive half-century from skipper Ashleigh Gardner and cameos from Harleen Deol and Deandra Dottin, chased down the 144-run target set by UP Warriorz to win their first match of the season, despite being 2-2 at one point.
Earlier, Gujarat Giants skipper Ashleigh Gardner won the toss and invited UP Warriorz to bat first. The Warriorz started on a high note but lost their first wicket in the second over when Dottin trapped Kiran Navgire (15) in front for LBW. Gardner then cleaned up the stumps of opener Vrinda Ganesh (6), reducing UP to 22 for 2.
Skipper Deepti Sharma and Uma Chetry (24) added 51 runs for the third wicket before Uma handed an easy catch to Priya off Dottin, marking the end of the partnership. Priya then dismissed Tahlia McGrath (0) and Grace Harris (4) in the very next over as UP was reduced to 74 for 5.
In her final over, Priya also took the wicket of Deepti Sharma (39), piling even more misery on UP. Gardner then ended Shweta Shekhawat’s gritty innings of 17, putting GG well ahead in the match. Sophie Ecclestone (2) was the next to depart after falling victim to Kashvee Gautam.
Alana King (19 not out) and Saima Thakor (15) added quick runs in the last two overs, taking UPW to a respectable total of 143 for 9 at the end of 20 overs.
In reply, GG lost their first wicket quickly as Beth Mooney (0) miscued a full toss from Grace Harris for a soft dismissal. Dayalan Hemalatha (0) was removed by Sophie in the very next over, reducing GG to 2-2.
Laura Wolvaardt (22) and Gardner added 55 runs for the third wicket to bring GG back into the match before Wolvaardt was dismissed by Sophie. Gardner (52) brought up her second consecutive half-century before falling to Tahlia McGrath.
Harleen Deol (34 not out) and Deandra Dottin (33 not out) then added an unbeaten 58-run partnership for the fifth wicket, taking GG over the line.
