The opposition on Thursday walked out of Lok Sabha before the voting on the Delhi services bill, accusing Home Minister Amit Shah of making an election speech and alleging that it was not allowed to raise some issues. Speaking to reporters, Leader of the Congress Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed that the issue was all about snatching the rights of an elected government but Shah was instead "abusive" to the opposition and made an election speech.

India's rice stocks were at nearly three times its target at the start of August, two government sources in the world's second biggest producer country said on Thursday. Coupled with the new season crop that is due to start trickling into the market by October, the surplus will raise market hopes of New Delhi relaxing a recent export ban. The world's biggest rice exporter last month ordered a surprise halt to non-basmati white rice exports, its largest category, driving prices to multi-year highs.
West Bengal: Court rejects Partha Chatterjee's bail plea in school jobs scam
A special court in Kolkata on Thursday rejected the bail prayer of former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the school jobs scam. Praying for bail, Chatterjee's lawyer submitted that he has been in custody for more than a year and cooperating with the investigation by the central agency. Opposing the bail plea, the counsel for ED submitted that he is a very influential person and granting bail to him at this stage will hamper the investigation.

Environment free of terror imperative for normal ties: MEA on Pak PM's remarks on talks
India on Thursday said an environment free of terror and hostilities is imperative for normal ties with Pakistan, days after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his willingness to hold talks with New Delhi.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India wants normal ties with all neighbouring countries including Pakistan and it is incumbent upon that country to create the environment.
He was responding to queries relating to comments by Sharif.
India should go for younger cheetahs habituated to human presence: African experts tell govt
Younger cheetahs that are habituated to management vehicles and human presence are preferred candidates for relocation to India, international experts involved in Project Cheetah have told the government based on lessons learnt from the initial experience in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park.
In a status report submitted to the government recently, the experts emphasised that younger cheetahs are more adaptable to their new environments and have higher survival rates compared to older cheetahs.

Market regulator Sebi cancels registration of MMTC as broker in NSEL case
Capital markets regulator Sebi has cancelled the registration of MMTC Ltd as a stock broker for its involvement in illegal "paired contracts" in a case pertaining to now defunct National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL).
While cancelling the licence, Sebi directed MMTC to allow its existing clients to withdraw or transfer their securities or funds held by it within 15 days.
