Two "petrol bombs" were hurled outside Raj Bhavan's main gate in Chennai on Wednesday. The Molotov cocktail was lobbed by a man who was immediately overpowered by the security on site.

A molotov cocktail is an incendiary weapon constructed using flammable substances, such as petrol, inside a glass container with a cloth wick that is lit by fire before being hand-thrown. Once thrown, it can shatter and have a similar impact to a small bomb, depending on the size.

A video of the incident outside the official residence of the Governor of Tamil Nadu surfaced on ANI. According to the news agency, a complaint has been lodged in Guindy police station.

According to a report by India Today, the assailant was identified as Karuka Vinoth. Voth was allegedly also arrested in 2022 for throwing petrol bombs at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Chennai. He was released only three days ago. The suspect is currently being interrogated on the matter to uncover his motivation behind the crime.

BJP state unit president K Annamalai commented on the incident, alleging it was a reflection of "the true law and order situation in Tamil Nadu" and holding DMK responsible.

In a post on X, Annamalai wrote, "Petrol bombs were hurled at Raj Bhavan today, reflects the true law and order situation in Tamil Nadu. While DMK is busy diverting the attention of people to insignificant matters of interest, criminals have taken to the streets."

"Incidentally, it is the same person who attacked BJP's Tamil Nadu headquarters in Chennai in Feb 2022 is held responsible for the attack on Raj Bhavan today. These continuous attacks only leave one to think that the DMK government is sponsoring these attacks. Thiru MK Stalin will now be preparing for the next diversion, as he always does," he added.
