Akhilesh predicts BJP defeat in 2027 UP polls, slams 193K jobs claim

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday called a recent advertisement to recruit 1.93 lakh teachers in Uttar Pradesh a political 'jumla' (gimmick) that will result in a massive electoral setback for the ruling BJP in the 2027 Assembly elections. In a detailed post on X, Yadav presented a mathematics of political backlash that will stem from the disappointment of lakhs of job aspirants and their families. If we assume at least 75 aspirants per post, it will amount to around 1.45 crore affected candidates. If we include just two family members per candidate, the number of affected voters translates to more than 4.34 crore, the former chief minister said. Dividing this number across the 403 Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh will translate to nearly 1.08 lakh voters per seat, he said. Even if half of these numbers are BJP voters, the party would still lose about 54,000 votes per seat. In such a scenario, the BJP would be reduced to double digits in the Assembly in 2027,

MCD launches tax amnesty scheme SUNIYO for FY26, waives old dues, penalties

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday announced the rollout of a one-time property tax amnesty scheme for the financial year 2025-26. Under the Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana (SUNIYO), people will be able to pay the principal amount of property tax of the current year (2025-26) and the previous five years (2020-21 onwards) in one go and all their previous dues (before 2020-21), including interest and penalty will stand waived off, the municipal corporation said. The MCD also noted that a similar one-time measure launched in 2022-23, the SAMRIDDHI scheme, also allowed full waiver of old arrears if the taxpayer paid recent dues i.e. due of five years for residential and six years for non-residential properties. The SUNIYO scheme will apply to all types of properties falling under the jurisdiction of the MCD. In his first General House meeting after taking over as Delhi Mayor, Raja Iqbal Singh on Wednesday also announced the removal of "user charges" linked to garbage ...

In BJP's model, money goes to rich; Congress gives it to poor: Rahul Gandhi

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday said that the BJP follows a model under which select rich people get entire money and resources, whereas in the Congress' model, money is put into the bank accounts and the pockets of the poor. The Congress leader was speaking at an event to mark Karnataka Congress government's two years in office, during which over one lakh title deeds were distributed to eligible beneficiaries, whose "undocumented habitations" have been declared as revenue villages. "Congress party government has completed two years. During the election, we made you promises. We had promised five guarantees. The BJP people said that Congress party will not be able to fulfill it. The Prime Minister said this won't be done," Gandhi said. Listing out the five guarantee schemes implemented by the government, he said, "We have told you that we will put money into the bank account of Karnataka's poor. Today, thousands of crores of rupees is being directly p

Cong dismisses Rijiju's govt 'did not ask for names for delegations' remark

The Congress on Monday dismissed as an "absolute lie" Union Minister Kiren Rijiju's reported assertion that that the government did not ask for names for the all-party diplomatic delegations going abroad, and said it was "cheap politics" to not get the names it selected cleared with the opposition party. Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the same PM who had abused the Congress publicly in countries such as Australia, the US, Qatar, South Korea and China, is taking the help of the opposition party in these delegations. "Why didn't the prime minister pick up the phone and speak to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi? Why didn't he have the courtesy to do that? The fact is that our narrative has been punctured and continues to get punctured because of the politics of polarisation in the country," Ramesh told PTI here. On Saturday, the Congress sa

BJP to hold training camp for MP leaders to boost public communication

The BJP will organise a training camp for its leaders in Bhopal to enhance their communication skills and avoid goof-ups in public, a move the party sought to delink from controversies surrounding two ministers over their remarks on Col Sophia Qureshi and the armed forces. The state BJP claimed the training initiative was pre-planned and a routine intra-party affair. "It has nothing to do with recent statements of BJP leaders. Such events are held routinely, and nothing more should be read into it," MP BJP spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi told PTI. The schedule of the training camp, which will be organised in June, will be out shortly, he said. The BJP faced criticism after state Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah purportedly termed Colonel Sofia Quereshi, the face of media briefings on Operation Sindoor, a 'sister of terrorists', during his public speech. The controversial remarks not only invited wide-scale condemnation from various sections of society and the Opposition, but also le

Delhi Master Plan 2041 to urbanise 48 villages, says PWD Minister

The Delhi Master Plan 2041 will be implemented soon and 48 villages in the national capital will get urbanised, Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma said on Saturday. The minister also announced that the first registry of properties falling under the Lal Dora category will be completely free of cost. The move is expected to resolve long-pending property disputes and enable people to obtain legal ownership documents without financial burden. The minister made the remarks during a visit to Daulatpur village in southwest Delhi, said a statement by Verma's office. "The long-awaited Master Plan 2041 is in its final stages and will be implemented very soon. Our goal is not just to create policies, but to transparently implement them on the ground with accountability," Verma told reporters. "Master Plan 2041 will change the face of Delhi's villages and provide the rural population with facilities at par with urban areas," he added. Under the ambitious plan, around 48 villages i

When national interest is involved, will always be present, says Tharoor

With the government nominating him to lead a diplomatic outreach delegation after Operation Sindoor, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said that when national interest is involved and his services are required, he will not be found wanting. Tharoor also said he is honoured by the invitation of the government to lead an all-party delegation to five key capitals to present the nation's point of view on recent events. His remarks came after the government announced that it will send seven all-party delegations to key partner countries, including members of the UN Security Council, later this month to convey India's message of zero tolerance against terrorism following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. "I am honoured by the invitation of the government of India to lead an all-party delegation to five key capitals, to present our nation's point of view on recent events," Tharoor said on X. 'Op Sindoor still on': BJP urges Oppn not to raise 'unwanted' questions

Slamming the Congress and other opposition parties, the BJP on Wednesday asserted that Operation Sindoor is still going on and it has been stopped only temporarily, asking them to refrain from raising "unnecessary and unwanted" questions on the issue. Talking to reporters, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the government has not used the word "ceasefire" anywhere and clearly stated that the solution to the issue of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) can be resolved through bilateral talk between India and Pakistan. The government believes that there is no possibility of any mediation on this issue, he said. "Hence, they should refrain from making unnecessary and unwarranted comments on this issue as Operation Sindoor is still not over," he said. He emphasised that on the one hand, the Congress and other opposition parties say they are with the government on the issue but this does not reflect in their behaviour. They say something and do something else which raises ...
