The Indian rupee appreciated for the third consecutive session and registered gains of 26 paise to close at 86.55 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, amid positive domestic equity markets and a weak American currency. The local unit jumped to its highest level in nearly 7 weeks as dollar stayed pressured on disappointing economic data from the US. Moreover, the strength of the Asian currencies also supported the rupee. However, a surge in crude oil prices capped some of the gains. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee witnessed high volatility. It opened at 86.71 then touched the intraday high of 86.54 and the low of 86.78 against the greenback. Indian shares rallied on Tuesday to scale a one-month peak, mirroring firm cues from global markets after data showed U.S. retail sales rebounded marginally in February, helping ease recession concerns. The benchmark 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 1,131.31 points, or 1.53 percent, to 75,301.26 while the broader NSE Nifty index .

INR rebounds to near 7-week high tracking positive cues from equities


The domestic equity benchmarks surged on Tuesday, fueled by positive global market sentiment and anticipation of key monetary policy decisions from Japan and the U.S. A strong, sustained bullish trend saw the Nifty cross 22,800, demonstrating robust investor confidence. All NSE sectoral indices closed in the green, with consumer durables, media, and realty sectors leading gains. Broader market indices, including midcap and smallcap, outpaced the main indices, signaling widespread market participation.

USDJPY pair is holding at a two-week high of 149.50 on Tuesday as dollar sees some firmness ahead of FOMC scheduled for the week. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note remained firm at 4.31%. DXY that measures the greenback against a basket of currencies is quoting above 103, but still struggles around 5-month lows. Concerns over US trade policies, with President Donald Trumps aggressive tariff stance raising fears of potential economic slowdown is keeping the greenback under pressure. Meanwhile, data yesterday showed that US retail sales came in slightly less than expected at 0.2% in February after tumbling by a revised 1.2 percent in January. However, President Donald Trump set to engage in discussions over Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin will also be watched for direction. Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan is set to announce its monetary policy decisions this week which took the yen to a six month high last week amid hawkish expectations after Japan's labor unions ...

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank of Mauritius (BOM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for establishing a framework to promote the use of local currencies, viz., the Indian Rupee (INR) and the Mauritian Rupee (MUR) for cross-border transactions. The MoU was signed by the Governor, Reserve Bank of India, Shri Sanjay Malhotra and the Governor, Bank of Mauritius, Dr. Rama Krishna Sithanen G.C.S.K. The MoU documents were exchanged in Port Louis, Mauritius in the presence of the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi and the Honourable Prime Minister of Mauritius, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
