After China visit, Indonesia prez-elect vows to strengthen ties with Japan

Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto said he wants to further strengthen relations with Japan as he met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday on the heels of a visit to China. Subianto, who's currently defence minister, told Kishida that the two countries are longtime friends who have built a cooperative relationship, and that he hoped to further strengthen the relationship. Japan has been seeking closer ties with Southeast Asian countries, especially in maritime security and defence, in the face of China's increasingly assertive military presence. Subianto, who will succeed Joko Widodo in October, chose Beijing for his first official overseas trip after his February election victory in a bid to emphasise steady ties with China amid rising tensions in the South China Sea, where China and the Philippines have had repeated high-seas confrontations. In his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Subianto pledged a continued friendly policy toward China. Chi

China flexes its might against the Philippines in disputed waters

It was a heart-pounding moment far out in the disputed South China Sea: One of at least five Chinese coast guard ships aggressively approached and sideswiped a Philippine patrol vessel, creating a loud, jarring noise that sent its Filipino crew scrambling to lower rubber fenders to cushion the boat's hull. As the high-seas faceoff unfolded on Tuesday, two Chinese coast guard ships used water cannons against a smaller supply boat carrying a Filipino admiral and his sailors. The high-pressure spray shattered the boat's windshield and mildly injured the admiral and four sailors with glass shards and splinters of debris. "That's very concerning and very worrisome, Vice Adm. Alberto Carlos later told reporters, after witnessing firsthand the Chinese actions against the supply boat Unaizah Mae 4, which he was aboard. As the highest-ranking Filipino military commander overseeing the disputed waters, Carlos joined the trip to ensure that any confrontation would not spiral out of control, th

China appoints former top naval commander Dong Jun as new defence minister

China on Friday named former naval commander General Dong Jun, said to be a close confidant of President Xi Jinping, as the new defence minister, two months after the summary dismissal of General Li Shangfu without an explanation. China's top legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), which confirmed Li's ouster in October, appointed Dong in his place, the official media reported. Dong, formerly the commander of the Chinese navy, was promoted to the rank of general in September 2021, making him one of the highest-ranking officers in active service, the China Daily reported. Regarded as a close confidant of President Xi, Dong was later elected to the Communist Party of China (CPC) in October last year. Before becoming the navy's top commander in 2021, he served in the Northern Sea Fleet, now a regular player in joint drills with the Russian Navy, the Eastern Sea Fleet, which focuses on potential conflicts with Japan, as well as the Southern Command Theatre, which oversees th

Chinese military spy balloon spotted in Taiwan Strait: Island's def min

Taiwan's Defence Ministry says a Chinese military surveillance balloon was spotted in the Taiwan Strait, as well as a large-scale dispatch of military aircraft and ships. The ministry said the balloon passed southwest of the northern port city of Keelung on Thursday night, then continued east before disappearing, possibly into the Pacific Ocean. Taiwan has threatened to shoot down such balloons, but the ministry did not say what, if any, action was taken. It said the balloon was monitored flying at an altitude of approximately 6,400 meters (21,000 feet). It also said 26 Chinese military aircraft were detected, along with 10 Chinese navy ships, in the 24 hours before 6 am Friday. Of the aircraft, 15 had crossed the median line that is an unofficial divider between the sides, but which Beijing refuses to recognize. Some also entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone outside the island's airspace. Taiwan's military monitored the situation with combat aircraft, navy vessels and

US accuses former army pilot of illegally training Chinese military pilots

The US has accused a former military pilot of illegally training Chinese military pilots, and is trying to extradite him from Australia. But the pilot's lawyer says his client has been unfairly singled out because of the current geopolitical struggle between the US and China. Pilot Daniel Duggan, 54, has been held in an Australian jail since his October arrest. Duggan's lawyer Dennis Miralis said outside a Sydney courtroom Tuesday that Duggan denies the allegations and will continue to fight the extradition process at every step. Australia's Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus last month approved the US extradition request. But before the extradition can proceed, a judge must first determine whether Duggan is eligible for extradition under Australian law. Miralis said the US Department of Defence had acknowledged there were other people helping foreign militaries but that the US and Australia had singled out Duggan for extradition. We are concerned that this does highlight the political

China building Army outpost near LAC disturbing sign: US Congressman

China building a military post near the Line of Actual Control with India is a disturbing sign of Chinese aggression with its neighbours, a top Indian American lawmaker said on Wednesday, following the appearance of a media report in this regard. Politico on Wednesday reported that China had built a military outpost near its disputed border with India. It cited new satellite imagery as showing the outpost, a move that signals Beijing's intentions for a long-term deployment at the global flashpoint. "The pictures, obtained by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies' China Power project and shared with NatSec Daily, show the People's Liberation Army constructed a headquarters and garrison to house troops at Pangong Tso, a remote lake that stretches across the Line of Actual Control between the two countries, Politico reported. The report of a new People's Liberation Army outpost near the Line of Actual Control between Indian and the People's Republic of China is another ..
